LPAR

Logical Partition

A logical partition: an independent, virtualized instance of an operating system running on a shared physical Power server.

An LPAR divides a physical Power server into multiple independent operating system instances, each with its own allocated processor, memory, and I/O resources. Power5's Micro-Partitioning made LPARs dramatically more flexible than the whole-processor partitioning of the POWER4 generation.
