Power5 Migration Paths
Concrete upgrade paths from IBM Power5, what changes at each hop forward, and why skipping straight to current generation is usually the right call.
Power5 is now seven full processor generations behind IBM's current Power11 line. At this distance, the migration conversation is simpler than it is for newer legacy hardware: there is effectively one recommended path.
The path forward
Skip straight to current generation (Power11)
The clear recommendation for Power5 shops. Every intermediate generation, Power6 through Power10, is either itself now out of standard support or approaching it. Landing on Power11 gets a full support lifecycle ahead instead of hardware partway through its own.
A supported near-term hop (Power10)
If budget is the binding constraint, a certified pre-owned Power10 system, still inside IBM's standard support window, can be a real interim option, though it delays rather than avoids the eventual current-generation project.
What we do not recommend
Migrating to another aging intermediate generation (Power6, Power7, or Power8) to save money now. All three are themselves out of, or close to, IBM's standard support, which just relocates the same risk this site exists to help you avoid.
